Police hate crime reports declined in 2024 in 42 major American cities, off a previous consecutive annual record by 2.7%, from a total of 3357 to 3268 according to a new multi-city survey (MCS) to be published soon for the Criminal Justice Research Alliance, by Prof. Emeritus Brian Levin. This small overall decrease is likely within the margin of error. Overall, in 2024, those cities with the most reports are: New York City, 648; Los Angeles 558 (victim estimate in chart), Chicago, 210; Boston, 203; Portland, OR, 164; Washington, DC 146, and Philadelphia, 116. The MCS for 2023 reported a 12% overall increase and set a record in a mostly-overlapping sample of 38 cities in that prior survey.
